Just finished my last exam, which means I'm free! Until Janurary, anyway. I am however very tired, as I have had little sleep for the past three nights, and I was up at 7am this morning. Teh suxor. This is another reason I was not able to make it to November Hotel last night, which is a terrible shame because it would have been fun.

I'm currently in the IT suites (E, predictably), waiting for the world to warm up a bit because it's bloody freezing. This afternoon I shall be getting the last of my christmas shopping. I may also pick up a new book to read, as I have just finished the latest Song of Ice and Fire (or Fire and Ice? I can never remember) and will need something to do over the weekend. I have Resident Evil 4 to play, but I'm near the end of that - which happens to be very good, apart from Fucking Ashley. Bitca.

For the past week I have had the desire to do many things. Things like tidy my room, update my website, read my book, put up christmas decorations, go to the gym, and much, much more. Unfortunately I did not have the time to do any of these, as I had to revise for my psychology exam. Now that I do have time to do these things, I no longer care to.

I had a feeling it was just the procrastination talking, anyway.

In other news, I keep waking up at 7am. When I don't need to be up any more. When I did need to be up at 7am, my body would be quite happy to sleep in until 12. And you know what I say to that?

Work

So, what have I been doing recently? Not a lot. Watching season 1 of Angel in a long-distance thon with Jai (I've seen up to and including Sanctuary, by the way), playing Star Wars: Battlefront 2, which has wonderful replayability, and work.

Work is quite cool. I've only done a four hour shift so far, and I can see how the six hour ones could get really dull, but there's never absolutely nothing to do, since I can just sit and watch whatever movie we have playing. Most of the time I'll be able to decide what goes on anyway. Depending on how hard I work, I may or may not get free movies - but I can always watch the sample movies anyway, which is cool because we usually get them before the movie is released (although they do have the time counter running on them).

Also attempting to get exercise, by actually going to fencing, and then going to the gym yesterday. I'm investgiating the University swimming pool, and how feasible it would be to use that once or twice a week.

I shall hopefully be going to see Harry Potter on friday, which is just one more reason why I love having most of fridays off.

And because I'm bored: This is the problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but we know nothing about each other. I'm going to rectify that. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me, something that should be obvious, but that you have no idea about. Ask away.

Wednesday was a very good day indeed. On that day I got the job in the video shop (hooray!) and I also found out Stargate had been renwed for another season (yay!).

I've also remembered what I forgot to mention when updating last time. In maths at the moment we have started doing hyperbolic functions, which are written as cosh, sinh, tanh, etc, but they are pronounced cosh, shine, and than. I thus find it difficult to sit through a class without being reminded of Life of Brian, and laughing hysterically.

The lecturer also pronounces the greek letter epsilon as ep-Cylon - which it is entirely possible is the correct pronounciation, but it just makes me think of BSG.

Somewhat Useful Update

There's one or two things I've been meaning to update with recently.

Firstly, the not-so-good news. My great aunt died at the weekend. She was in her nineties (I don't know her exact age) and had been ill so often recently, it's probably for the best. It hasn't really affected me much since I didn't see her often, but it's weird to think that the number of family members that I can name is now down to eight. I have to miss the funeral (which is tomorrow) because I have a maths test I must sit if I want to pass the course, and when I asked if they could give me it at a different time they said it was 'too short notice'. Yes, well, these things usually are.

Second, the good news. I applied for a job in the local video shop, and have been to an interview. What the job entails is not much different from my current job, but bonuses include being able to sit down, being warm, an extra £1.25 and hour, and no golfers. Well, fewer golfers. It would be roughly ten hours a week - on thursday evenings and at weekends - and is, in a word, perfect. The interview was on monday and they said they'd get back to me soon.

Thirdly, the I've-forgotten-what-I-was-going-to-say news. I'll get back to this.

Finally, the end-of-the-world news. I realised I hadn't checked my phone in hours, and when I did, it was 19:19. Almost had a heart attack. Also, in the last two maths homeworks, I have recieved 19 marks. My bus passes thus far have both expired on the 19th of the month. This is getting silly.

So, obviously, the updating my LJ with crap every day hasn't happened. Which is a plus, probably. I've just resorted to surfing all of the web pages I've ever visited continuously. I actually dragged myself back to the KT the other day ("The KT Awards"? Popularity contest.) and amused myself by looking at the signitures of the people in the Critter&RP forum who are convinced that they have impressed 500 pernese dragons of all colours, shapes, sizes, and sports. Then there's the creatures they make up themselves. Really, what is the point?

While looking at these sigs I stumbled across one with a banner that said "Dark Fort: Live Fast, Die Horribly" and I was intrigued enough to check it out. Seems it's a PBeM where the characters are not in any way Mary Sues, and are in fact an all lot like the sort of people you might expect them to be. As in, egotistical bastards. So congrats to the Dark Fort people for doing something original.

After doing all this Pern-related stuff, I had the urge to get out my Dragonriders of Pern PC game last night. When it first came out, it took ages to load since it was pretty graphics-intensive, but that was about four years ago. So I tried installing it on my laptop and I get this error message "Problem with installation: minimum requirements not met. Game requires Pentium 2 or more."

My laptop is a pentium 4.

Eventually I found a patch that is downloadable from the Ubisoft site that makes the program recognise pentium 4, but I was mightily displeased.

So, what else have I been doing...

Oh, I have 9 o'clock starts every day which means I'm up at seven. After a year of not getting up before nine, this is quite painful and I wish it would stop. Alas, holidays are eight weeks aaway at least. On the plus side, I seem to be getting the weekends free of work, so I get long lies then.

Oh! Finished the Dark Tower. Enjoyable, though not the ending I had hoped for.

Um...oh yeah, one of my psychology lecturers looks like Dominic Monaghan, so I hope that makes some of you jealous.

Hmm. I'm fairly sure I have more to say, but that's all I can think of right now.

...and after having typed that, I looked at my icon and realised I have one more thing: Go WATCH SERENITY. In the UK it comes out tomorrow (advance screenings today), in the US and Australia it's been out for about a week. It's awesome.

The Adventures of Leppy McGee

Heheh, I was looking through the stuff I have on the computer and I came across the beginnings of a story that I started years ago. And so I present it to you, my humble reader, edited only minimally since first written.

Leppy McGee collapsed onto a moss-covered log cursing his heavy pack and worn old boots. He had set off on his quest with the breaking of dawn, determined to find the cave he was looking for before it got dark. Leppy was beginning to suspect that the directions given to him by the strange smelling dwarf he had met in one of the pubs in the main Leprechaun city of Clovendale were not as accurate as the dwarf had claimed. However, they were all Leppy had to go on if he wanted to find this cave. And he most desperately did want to find this cave. As far as Leppy knew, the cave was supposed to be at the exact spot where he was sitting now, which it obviously wasn’t. He had been wandering around the surrounding forest for a good hour but had failed to find anything. His feet were sore and his stomach empty and he was more than ready to give up. Just as Leppy was about to take his pack off and start making something to eat, a faint buzzing noise reached his ears. His head whipped around and was face to face with a rather angry looking insect.

“Ah! Wasp!” Leppy yelled, and fell backwards over the log. It didn’t delay him long however, and within a few seconds he was back on his feet and sprinting as fast as his tired legs could carry him in what he hoped was the opposite direction. Looking back to see how far away his pursuer was, he tripped over the first of many tree stumps and landed flat on his face. The wasp, suitably amused, flew back home to brag about the successful spook to all his little wasp friends. If only the tree stump had found the situation as funny, many things may have turned out differently.

Leppy groaned and pushed himself into a kneeling position, thinking that he really needed to start watching where he was going. He stood up and dusted off his clothes before looking up, and subsequently almost falling down again. In front of him was the mouth to the cave he had been looking for earlier. Of course, earlier he had found lots of caves, but he knew this was the one he was looking for as it had a “Welcome to the cave of the Magical Tapping Fairy, please knock on the door and wait” sign hanging down from the ceiling. Not seeing any door to knock on, and not having been brought up with the good manners to go looking for one, Leppy just walked in.

The second his foot crossed the threshold there was a loud bang and a flash of light, followed quickly by a great deal of smoke. Leppy coughed and spluttered, and stumbled back out into the open again. After recovering somewhat, he peered through his teary eyes into the cave.

“He-splkfjifj!” Was as far as he got without lapsing into another coughing fit. Eventually it subsided, and he let himself breathe deeply until he was sure he saw a figure in the smoke still pouring from the cave.

“Hello?”

The figure began to move out of the smoke until it was at last discernible as that which Leppy sought: the Magical Tapping Fairy.

“Sorry about that, I’m experimenting with pyrotechnics.” The fairy was not at all what Leppy had expected. Dressed in standard issue white dress, complete with sparkly wand and apparently plastic wings, the fairy was most definitely a drag queen. While he spoke, the Magical Tapping Fairy made a strange waving gesture with his hand that Leppy tried to imitate, but only succeeded in hitting himself in the nose. “Is there a reason you didn’t knock?”

“I…erm…couldn’t see a door.” Leppy mumbled.

“Yes, someone ran off with it last week. So why didn’t you knock?”

“If there’s no door, where do I knock?” Leppy asked, confused. The Magical Tapping Fairy pursed his lips.

“People have no imagination these days. Oh well. How may I help you?”

“I’m on a quest,” began Leppy “I’m sick fed up of being a cliché Leprechaun. With my red hair, pointy ears, small height, fascination with shiny things…” Leppy trailed off as his eyes began to wander across to the fairy’s wand, but he resolutely brought them up again “…and coming from Ireland, everybody sees me as a stereotype. But I’m so much more than that, and I want you to change my physical appearance so people want to find out who I am instead of passing me off as another Leprechaun.”

“Ah, well, physical appearance. That takes some Tapping, I can tell you.” The Magical Tapping Fairy seemed to take great pleasure in considering the options out loud. “Hmmm. Oh, that might- no, they outlawed that last century. What about- damn, souls are worth squat these days. Hrm. Oh…now, that’s an idea,” he turned back to Leppy. “There is something you could get that would help me. A strange thing it is too. A Conveniently Misplaced Metal Stick, a stick made from an unusual alloy with strange properties, the main one being that it makes the Stick disappear and reappear in a completely different location. Not particularly difficult to find, but incredibly difficult to keep. Now, what could we do to aid you…” the Magical Tapping Fairy started looking around for inspiration, then Tapping his wand in the air in front of Leppy. Some objects appeared, and began to slowly float down to the floor. Leppy grabbed them out of the air and inspected each.

“So how do I know you’re actually able to change my appearance? You could just be saying that to get me to find this stick for you.” Leppy said.

“Ah, yes, the proof. Well now, I could always make you taller for your little adventure.” Taking a piece of flat, dark, silver metal the Magical Tapping Fairy peered at it for a few seconds before looking back at Leppy. “By the looks of things you’ll have quite a bit to walk, but it’s fairly easy going. Often the case with the Stick. Probably best if you’re a bit taller, though. Stand still.” The Magical Tapping Fairy took one last long look at Leppy before Tapping him on the head three times. Leppy felt a tingly sensation spread from the top of his head down to his toes and back up again. Without realising it he had closed his eyes, and when he opened them again he was taller than the Tapping Fairy.

“Oh thank you Magical Tapping Fairy, thank you!” Leppy exclaimed.

“Oh come now, it’s Bad Habit to my friends.”

Leppy wasn’t entirely sure how to take this.

“Anyway, this here is the locator, and it’ll show you where you are and where the Stick is, and can also be used as a map. The little yellow dot is the stick, and since you aren’t in range you’re not on it, but you would be represented by a little blue dot.” Habby passed the piece of dark silver metal to Leppy, took another of the objects in his hands and pinned it on the now tall leprechauns’ cloak. “This tells the locator where you are so don’t lose it.”

Leppy read the badge and frowned. “‘Don’t come out the closet unless you’re wearing something absolutely FABULOUS’? Okay then…”

“I knew you’d like that. And finally, my friend, your weapon.” Habby took his hands from behind his back and bowed low, offering the object in his hands to Leppy.

“It’s a spoon.” Leppy said.

“It’s a spoon, he says! I’ll have you know that this here is not just any old spoon, this here is a magical spoon. I don’t give these away to just any old leprechaun you know.” The Magical Tapping Fairy looked around, seemingly checking things off of a mental list. “Right, now, I’m sorry I can’t get you closer than the trees on the edge of the locator but the Stick creates a field around it not allowing things to be Tapped in or out, which is why I can’t just Tap the Stick here. So, would you like me to tap you there tonight? Or would you rather stay here? I have this cosy little back room…”

“Tonight’s fine.” Leppy interrupted. He was beginning to get scared of the looks Bad Habit was giving him.

Habit looked sad for a moment and sighed, before raising his wand again. “Okay then. Hope to see you soon. Goodbye.” And with that, the Magical Tapping Fairy Tapped Leppy away.

There were going to be a lot of other characters, including a Grey Bear, an Evil Scottish Munchkin, and a little yellow rubber duck called Dal, and the main villain was going to be a Mary Sue called Magenta who killed people using the colour pink.

Discrimination

Since I was born, I've been discriminated against for a reason that most people seem to overlook. As some of you know, my surname begins with a 'W' and this means that whenever classes have to be split up and the most logical way to do so seems to be alphabetically, I am inevitably in the last group. Now, while this may not seem like such a big deal to those who have never suffered it, it can be a right pain in the arse.

Like today, for instance, where my surname puts me in a 4-5 class rather than a 3-4 class. The 3-4 class would allow me to return home, have tea, drop off some stuff and pick up some other stuff, before coming back in for 7 this evening. But because I finish at 5, I can't do that.

Irritating as hell, so it is.

Day Two

This is back-to-Uni day two, and also the second day in a row that I have updated my LJ. Noticing a pattern?

Mondays, for me, are horrible. I have maths at 9-10, then a two hour wait before psychology at 12-1. Another hour and I have Philosophy 2-3, and after that there is two more hours of psychology related stuff. For almost an hour yesterday in the psychology related stuff, we did standard deviation.

This is the fourth time we have done standard deviation in psychology. Contrary to popular belief, standard deviation is not dfficult. There are four basic steps involved, which you cannot fail to complete if you have a calculator, and can make a good attempt at doing without one. It is understandable that people would need to go over standard deviation, but not four times, and especially not when you get the computer to do it for you anyway.

*ahem*

Tuesdays are almost the same, except without the added psychology related stuff. Wednesdays are just maths and psychology. Thursdays are maths, followed by philosophy tutorial, followed by a three hour wait, followed by two more hours of maths. Fridays (bless them) are just maths. All of this means that I will be bored for a lot of the time, with nothing to do except ramble on my LJ. Lucky you!

Thus does my second year at University begin in the same way as the first - with me running around the campus trying to find my maths class. I got in ten minutes early and thought that if it wasn't in the same place as last year, I'd have time to go to the IT Suites and find out where it is...but of course, the IT Suites don't open until nine, when the lecture was supposed to be. So we (I was with a friend) thought we'd try the library instead, which also didn't open until nine, then we checked the Harris building where someone had told me there might be a maths class. Wandered around the Harris building and bumped into the lecture, with a nice man standing outside who asked us if we were looking for second year maths. Yes! We went inside.

Of course, when he said second year maths he meant second year engineering maths, so we left that class quickly. Since it was now just after nine, and the IT Suites would be open, that was our next stop. After spending five minutes or so looking around Blackboard, we found reference to a room called G5 - great, it's in the same building as we are! Run off to G5. No one was there.

Last resort, we think, is to go to the maths building. So we wander off up Perth Road to the maths building, and talk to the nice maths secretary who is a woman named Laura, who told us we were supposed to be in G8. Yes, that does happen to be two doors down from G5. To make matters worse, we had also investigated G6 and G7. But not G8, noooo.

Back to the Tower Building, and into G8 - only half an hour late. But they were only revising stuff anyway.

On sunday I was at the local Dobbies (garden centre) and saw the most amazing plant EVOR. Here is a photopost detailing my resulting adventure.

So here I am, having returned home with my purchase, which turns out to be...The Amazing Dinosaur Plant!

The perfect plant for me, as if you forget to water it, it just curls up into a little ball until you next remember.

The instructions on the back have a nice little backstory, as well as some interesting pictures we can use for comparison later. For now, though, it's into the box!

The bowl seems to be made of cheap plastic, but that was to be expected really. Everything else is as advertised. So, what else do I need to make this miracle plant grow (except Rita Repulza)? Water, of course!

There we are. After briefly reading the instructions, I arranged the plant as ordered.

Hmm. I seem to have fewer 'lava rocks' than the picture on the box indicates, but I will have to make do. Next up is to add water.

And that's it. Go away, have a cup of tea, watch some Stargate re-runs on TV, come back and hour later to find...

Slightly blurry. Oh well. Some Will & Grace episodes and two more hours later...

Not quite the same size as the one on the box, still bigger than before. The profile view shows...

Nothing! Weird. Maybe it's like the Doors in The Dark Tower - it can only be seen from certain angles?

Ah-hah! That must be it!

Lost

Can't really remember what has been going on in the past few weeks, so it can't be that interesting. I have mostly been watching Lost (as I am a cheating scum and download it), which I have been enjoying. I've found it's a bit predictable though; I keep hoping it will surprise me and it just doesn't. I've been thinking about having a Lost night so everyone can watch the next few episodes, but I'll see who's interested in it first.

Also, I've finally managed to get my hands on some Serenity tickets for wednesday evening. While not to the World Premiere (which is tomorrow) it's still at least a month before I would otherwise see it. Also, the cast are doing a signing in Edinburgh at lunchtime so I might drop by for that. I can't get my DVDs signed because they are currently on loan to someone, which is a pain, but I do have a rare copy of the first comic with the Mal on the front, so I'll get that signed instead.

I've also almost-finally decided to get an iPod. I say almost-finally because I won't decide whether to get one or not until I can think of what to get inscribed on it. Currently, these are the ones I've thought of:
